Glen Eyre Quietway: If it can't be improved, it should be removed
We continue to be dismayed by the design and implementation of the section of the Glen Eyre Quietway between the University of Southampton’s halls of residence and Bassett Avenue.
The changes have effectively changed this section of Glen Eyre Road to a single lane road. This has meant that conflict between road users has been built into the design. Indeed, cyclists have told us that the changes have made the route less pleasant and less safe to cycle.
We remain concerned about the consultations undertaken and also the safety of the scheme. At full Council on 20 March, Cllr Richard Blackman called for the scheme to be reviewed. If it can’t be improved, then it should be removed.
As Liberal Democrats we remain supportive of active travel measures to encourage walking, cycling and wheeling. We are also committed to reducing car usage in Southampton. However, without real alternatives such as a Park and Ride scheme and an expanded metro system then active travel measures will not enjoy the success they need to, particularly if they are poorly designed.
