Candidate: James Read
Parliamentary Constituency: Southampton Test
Local campaigner James Read, who has lived in Southampton for over 20 years, now lives in St Denys, within Portswood ward. He works for an insurance company and has been actively campaigning in Portswood for over a decade, standing as the candidate in the last City Council elections. He has been endorsed by at least the previous five Lib Dem candidates and councillors for Portswood, and is keen to fight for local residents as part of a Liberal Democrat group on the council.
James is an active campaigner and in recent years has campaigned to improve road & pavement repairs, against fracking in Southampton, to save the cheque book, for better play areas, against fluoride, against Post Office closures, for better public toilets, against charging disabled drivers on Itchen Bridge, against school and social care cuts and against leaving the European Union.
James believes that it is shocking that Labour came to power in Southampton almost a decade ago but the area of Portswood looks like it has been forgotten. If elected, he will be a local champion for the area and will campaign to build a better Portswood.
James is especially interested in environmental issues, the economy and, as a former auxiliary nurse, the health service. He significantly reduced the Labour majority in Portswood in 2019 to just 203, and feels that the momentum is with him to win Portswood back for the Lib Dems in the delayed 2021 elections.
