Residents near Bassett Avenue and the Chilworth Roundabout are calling for urgent action to tackle persistent motorbike noise caused by illegally modified exhausts and antisocial riding. The noise pollution—often involving racing at all hours—has become a major disruption to quality of life across the area.

Even households located well away from the main road are being disturbed, with many residents reporting sleepless nights despite having double glazing and dense vegetation barriers. The issue has become a growing concern among the local community.

Local resident Kurosh Shadmand has launched a petition urging Southampton City Council to take stronger action. His proposals include regular enforcement spot checks on Bassett Avenue, increased policing of dangerous driving, and the installation of acoustic cameras to detect and deter excessively noisy vehicles.

The campaign has received the full backing of Cllr Sam Chapman, Liberal Democrat councillor for Bassett, who said:

“This is a growing problem that many residents have raised with me. We need targeted action to crack down on the worst offenders and restore peace to our neighbourhoods.”

The petition calls for:

  • Regular spot checks on Bassett Avenue for illegal exhausts
  • Enforcement against dangerous and antisocial driving
  • Investment in acoustic cameras as a long-term deterrent

The petition is available to sign online here

Residents are encouraged to share their experiences, as further evidence will help build pressure for meaningful action. The Liberal Democrats are urging Southampton City Council to treat the issue with the seriousness it deserves.
