The Liberal Democrat vision for Britain

Liberal Democrats in Southampton have welcomed the launch of the Liberal Democrats' vision for Britain by Party Leader Nick Clegg MP. Called 'Make it Happen', the paper will be debated at the party's conference in Bournemouth in September.

Southampton City Council Liberal Democrat Leader, Cllr Adrian Vinson, says: "The Liberal Democrats offer a Square Deal Budget. No gimmicks. No election stunts. No cons. Just a straight, value-for- money, package protecting core services which benefit everyone, young as well as older, but especially the least-well-off and most vulnerable."

The Tory Honeymoon is over

In Southampton, as nationally, the Tory bubble has burst. This is after they had a decidedly shaky start in May, with their Leader so unprepared that he was unable to announce his Cabinet at the Annual Council.

Swaythling Councillors stand firm in supporting the people

"As ward councillors for Swaythling we are both proud of the work we have done for the people of Swaythling over many years. We have both been very involved in local residents groups, worked to get improved facilities such as the Mansbridge play ground, helped residents with problems like helping the local elderly to settle in new accommodation when work was being done on their homes," commented Dave Beckett and Ann Milton their work in the community.

"Great" move new Tory Cabinet!

"At a stroke you have snubbed our two universities, our colleges, and our major employers, not to mention the schools themselves. By appointing an out-of-town 'we are friends with important people in London' organisation to run our two new secondary schools the Tories have said they trust these people more than their fellow citizens and partner organisations in the city," commented Bassett Councillor Liz Mizon on the school decision.

Utter Disbelief Silences Council Chamber at the Conservative's Schools Decision

After 18 months of hard work consulting parents, pupils, head teachers and staff, and the community, the Conservative Administration has decided the fate of the two new secondary schools in the City. They decided that the Oasis academy bid had won. The decision was taken at a Cabinet Meeting after hearing pleas from head-teachers, governors and politicians from both other parties to award the running of the schools to the Southampton Trust. This was the bid put in by the City's education partners; the universities and colleges plus key businesses in the city and the group already working closely with our schools trying to improve standards.

Liberal Democrats slam Academies Bid

"Our city schools should be run by Southampton people for Southampton" say Southampton's Lib Dem group of councillors. The Group supports the increasing number of school head teachers and governors who back the bid for the Southampton Educational Trust to run the two new secondary schools in the City.

Opposition praise Lib Dems

At the Annual Meeting of the City Council praise came for all side of the Council Chamber for the work done by the outgoing Lib Dem Administration in securing improvements in the city. Conservative Cllr Alec Samuels, the new Council Leader said 'the previous administration has clearly made significant improvements'' and commended the 'right direction of travel'. He paid particular tribute to the out-going Liberal Democrat administration for their 'aggressive efforts' to deal with the state of the city's roads.

Weston ShoreScapes Heritage Project almost complete

The great project to regenerate part of Southampton's shore line is currently nearing completion and it should be complete by early May 2007. The initial proposals for the Weston Shore were developed in consultation with Weston and Waterside Park residents. The residents of all age groups were consulted and at various stages by means of meetings and displays plus Council Ward members, residents and key stakeholders attend Weston Steering Group meetings, these discussions with local community as far back as 2001.

Southampton's Lib Dems take the fight for your Post Offices directly to No.10

Post offices are the lifeblood of communities in both rural and urban areas, particularly when they are combined with other services, such as the local shop. When the local post office closes other services often follow suit, which can be devastating for the community. That is why Liberal Democrats across the city have been fighting to save your Post Offices and that is why we have taken the fight directly to the Prime Minister Tony Blair in Downing Street.

Lib Dems set the agenda

In the last four years in Southampton Liberal Democrats have formed the administration of the City council although at no time have we had majority control of the council working in the difficult situation of a minority administration. Despite this we have achieved major improvements for the people of Southampton in the way their city is run and its prospects for the future.

Lib Dems set lowest Council Tax

At just 3.3% Southampton's Lib Dem-led Council has set the lowest council tax increase since the city became a unitary authority. With Tory-led Hampshire opting for a massive 4.9% and Portsmouth on 4% the increase for Southampton's taxpayers will also be the lowest in the region. With pensions set to rise by 3.6% this will be especially good news for senior citizens.

We can cut crime !!

Today the Liberal Democrats have launched a nationwide campaign to cut crime. At the centre of the campaign are the party's Five Steps to a Safer Britain. This campaign has been launched because public fears and concerns about crime and anti-social behaviour remain very high. Even in low crime areas, many people are worried about their safety, often thanks to sensationalist reporting in the media and breathless rhetoric from government ministers.

If anyone in the country thinks we are not an a era of three party politics then they need look no further Southampton and any thoughts they had it was not the case will be dispelled. After the poll on Thursday each of the three main parties has 16 seats.

Enough is Enough!

Tackling anti-social behaviour is top of the Lib Dem agenda - SOUTHAMPTON'S Liberal Democrats have said: "Enough is enough" to those who blight the lives of so many citizens. Councillor Liz Mizon is the city cabinet member responsible for tackling anti social behaviour. She reports that an expanded team of 17 City Patrol officers is on the streets with CCTV vans. A 24 hour 'phone line has made it easier for residents to get support from enforcement officers.

Decent homes for all

UNDER the Liberal Democrats, Southampton's housing has made great strides. The Council is on target to meet the Government's Decent Homes standard by 2010 with £22 million invested last year, as well as 100 empty properties brought back into use and 400 families helped avoid losing their homes.

Veracity Ground £600,000 improvement

In July 2004 City Councillor Gerry Drake asked the Council to carry out a study to see what could be done to improve the Veracity Ground. Now, following a successful bid for finance, the Ground is benefiting from a revamp of the football pitches, five-a-side pitches, skatepark, trimtrail and floodlit multi-use-games area, as well as landscaping. Improvements are also planned to the basketball area, children's playground and changing rooms.
