Lib Dems Protest at Tory Plans to Close Popular Library3.30.00pm GMT Tue 9th Feb 2010
Southampton Liberal Democrats are campaigning against Conservative plans to close Millbrook Library, a facility popular with local residents. The library's after-school club is very popular. The library not only stocks books, but also allows users access to the Internet, allowing many local schoolchildren to complete homework assignments that they otherwise couldn't. Local Liberal Democrat campaigner Steve Plumridge says: 'If we lose this library, how can many of the local children continue their learning outside of school hours? Closing this library means taking away a valuable resource. Myself and other local people are tired by the way we're always forgotten by the council. What we need is more investment in libraries, and the local area, not less.' With the next nearest libraries being situated in Lordshill and Shirley, many residents, particularly children or those who simply can't travel to reach them, will no longer have access to the library system. David Callaghan, Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Southampton Test, says: 'It is an absolute disgrace that the Conservatives plan to close this key public service, when at the same time they're spending £85,000 on a spin doctor'. A petition to save the library has had tremendous local support, including from local businesses. With over 400 signatures collected already, Steve and David plan to present the petition to the City Council, starting with a march from Southampton Central railway station (Toys R Us side) at 11am on Thursday 11th February. All are welcome.
