Swaythling Councillors stand firm in supporting the people2.00.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 21st Aug 2007
"As ward councillors for Swaythling we are both proud of the work we have done for the people of Swaythling over many years. We have both been very involved in local residents groups, worked to get improved facilities such as the Mansbridge play ground, helped residents with problems like helping the local elderly to settle in new accommodation when work was being done on their homes," commented Dave Beckett and Ann Milton their work in the community. Commenting further on the travellers site they said :- "We believe that a major part of our role of ward councillors is to articulate the views of our residents. When the Gypsy site at Monks Brook was suggested we surveyed the whole ward to assess the views of people across Swaythling, not just Mansbridge. From that it was clear there was strong feeling against the site so we have spoken up against it at all relevant council meetings and have voted against it. We also have worked behind the scenes to ensure that the site has the minimum effect on the lives of residents. As a result of this work there is a very robust management plan in place for the site." And so they continued :- "We will not be resigning as we intend to carry on giving of our best to the people of Swaythling as long as we are able."
