1.00.00pm GMT Sat 18th Mar 2006

Council's now have addition powers to tackle the problem of litter and the Lib Dem administration at the Civic Centre plan to use these powers as far as they possibly can.

These powers include :-

  • Litter offences now include private property, so the council can enforce litter offences on any open land, including gardens.

  • Businesses will have to clear up litter up to 100m around their premises.

  • Owners of land will have to clear up flytipping.

  • Selling or repairing vehicles (for business purposes) on the road will now be an offence.

Cllr Jill Baston, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, says, "These new powers can make a great difference to our city environment, and we intend to use them. We are setting up a pilot project in the Polygon area, and will then extend across the city as soon as possible."
